Electropolished Pipe for Mumbai's Industrial Belts

Mumbai's process industry sits in several separate pockets, and each asks something different of a pipe. Pharma and life-science plants cluster in the north-eastern suburbs, small manufacturers fill the MIDC estates around Andheri, and the Chembur–Trombay–Mahul belt in the east carries oil, fertiliser and chemical-terminal operations.

WFI and purified water loops

316L with a smooth internal surface and verified passivation, for pharma and biotech plants in the north-eastern suburbs.

CIP and SIP lines

A smooth bore cleans faster and drains better, which matters for food, beverage and personal-care plants.

Laboratory and R&D utility

Clean, documented tubing for research and quality-control facilities.

Clean utility in the Chembur–Trombay belt

DM-water, sampling and instrument lines where cleanliness matters.

Export-oriented units

A full document pack that survives overseas customer audits.

Local Buying Notes for Mumbai:
  • Same city: we are in Mumbai, so you can send a third-party inspector to check the tube against the MTC before dispatch.
  • Mumbai is coastal: Humid, salt-laden air favours 316L on exposed runs, while 304L is fine for most interior hygienic lines.
  • Honest fit: Main process piping in refinery-type plants is mostly carbon or alloy steel. Our EP pipe suits clean utilities, laboratories, pharma and food lines, and we will say so before you order.

The 5-Step Electropolishing and Passivation Process

01

Degreasing and Cleaning

Oils, cutting fluids and drawing residues are completely removed first. The finish is only as good as the chemical preparation.

02

Pickling / Activation

Where weld heat tint or surface oxide is present, it is etched and activated so the pipe surface electropolishes uniformly.

03

Anodic Electropolishing Bath

The pipe acts as anode in an electrolytic acid bath. High microscopic peaks dissolve first, levelling the surface and stripping free iron.

04

Passivation Stabilisation

The chromium-rich passive layer is stabilised per ASTM A967 / ASTM B912 to prevent future pitting and galvanic attack.

05

DI Water Rinse and Drying

High-purity deionised water rinse removes all electrolytic residues, followed by hot air drying, capping and clean poly-sleeving.

Mumbai: Head Office City for India's Drug Makers

Mumbai's textile mills have given way to engineering, diamond polishing, healthcare, pharmaceutical marketing and information technology, the city is India's main financial centre, and several major drug companies are headquartered here: Cipla, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Lupin are all based in Mumbai, and Wockhardt's global headquarters is at Wockhardt Towers in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

When a company is headquartered in Mumbai and its plants are elsewhere, the tube specification and the vendor approval may be handled here while the material goes to the plant. We are based in Mumbai too, at Kumbharwada, so a head-office team can deal with a supplier in its own city.

Vendor Approval from a Mumbai Head Office

Before a corporate quality team adds a tube supplier to its approved list, it usually wants documents it can check on paper. These are the ones we can provide with a Mumbai vendor-approval file:

  • ISO 9001:2015 certificate for our quality management system.
  • A specimen EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing how each tube length is traced to its heat number.
  • Chemical analysis from an NABL-accredited laboratory, and PMI records for every length.
  • A specimen internal Ra report, as issued with every electropolished lot.
  • The tube standards we supply to: ASTM A270, A269, A249 and A312, with SF1 and SF4 finishes as defined in ASME BPE; grades 304, 304L, 316, 316L, and 904L supplied electropolished.

Aarey and the Bombay Milk Scheme: Mumbai's Dairy History

Mumbai also has one of India's best-known public dairy projects. In 1949 the government handed about 1,300 hectares of forest at Aarey, in Goregaon East, to Bombay's dairy development board. Under milk commissioner Dara Khurody the buffaloes and dairy farmers kept in sheds around the city were moved to Aarey Milk Colony, which Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated in 1951.

The Bombay Milk Scheme run from Aarey supplied the city from a centralised, government-run dairy to milk booths across Mumbai, replacing milk that had often been unhygienic. Aarey still has milk plants, and about 16,000 cattle are kept there on 32 cattle farms, so dairy equipment and hygienic stainless pipework remain part of the city's industrial life.

Writing a Group-Wide Tube Specification in Mumbai

A specification written once at head office and applied to several plants should say which lines need SF4 electropolished 316L (water for injection, clean steam, hot-sanitised purified water and product contact after the final purification step) and which can run on SF1 mechanically polished tube, such as ambient purified water and utilities. It should also fix one OD series, usually ASME BPE, so spares and spools are interchangeable between sites.

Write the documents into the specification too: the 3.1 certificate per heat, PMI, the Ra report and the installer's weld and passivation records. When every plant buys against the same document, a validation team at any site receives the same evidence and does not have to argue about it again.

What a Mumbai Buyer Should Put in an RFQ

  • The plant the tube will be delivered to, even if the order is placed from a Mumbai office.
  • The service of each line (WFI, clean steam, purified water, product, CIP or utilities) and the required finish, SF1 or SF4, with your Ra limit.
  • OD x wall and metres per size to ASME BPE or ASTM A270 / A269, or pipe sizes to ASTM A312.
  • Your vendor-approval document list, so we can send it with the quotation.
  • We reply with a quotation within 24 hours; delivery time depends on size, quantity and stock and is confirmed in writing.
