Amritsar's Dairy Heritage: The Verka Milk Plant
Amritsar gave its name to Punjab's best-known dairy brand. Verka, a village on the city's outskirts, is where the first milk plant of its kind in North India was established in 1959, and the brand now belongs to Milkfed, the Punjab state cooperative milk federation formed in 1973. The Amritsar plant on Batala Road is run by the Amritsar District Cooperative Milk Producers Union and holds BIS certification for its quality management system with HACCP.
Verka's range has grown well beyond pasteurised packaged milk to ghee, table butter, skimmed and whole milk powder, cheese and sweetened flavoured milk. Each of those product families brings its own hygienic piping demands. Alongside Verka, Amritsar's Focal Point and Mehta Road estates house food-processing, textile and engineering units.
Flavoured Milk, Cheese and Fermented Dairy: Why the Tube Specification Tightens
Long-shelf-life flavoured milk is sterilised, so its process lines run hotter than ordinary pasteurised milk, and everything after the sterilisation step must stay sterile to the filler. That is where electropolished 316L tube is worth specifying: a smooth, passive bore resists fouling at high temperature and stands up to hot caustic and acid CIP cycle after cycle. Sugar and cocoa in flavoured milk add to the fouling load, which is one more reason the bore finish matters.
Fermented products such as curd and lassi carry live cultures. Any residue in a product line can carry over and upset the next batch. Electropolished tube on culture dosing, fermented-product transfer and filling lines, installed with a continuous slope to drain, makes cleaning validation repeatable. Raw-milk reception and chilled-water services can stay in 304 with a standard finish.
Food Processors in Amritsar's Estates
Amritsar's food units, from pickles and sauces to sweets and packaged foods, need sanitary product and CIP lines. Salty and acidic products such as pickles and chutneys call for 316L rather than 304, because chlorides at warm temperatures pit 304 over time. Electropolishing is justified on lines cleaned between every batch or every flavour.
Sweet makers working with khoa and other milk-based products face the same residue problem as the dairy, and the same 304L or 316L product-contact rule applies to them.
