Why Indian Pharma and Biotech Plants Are Switching to Electropolished (EP) Pipes

Executive Key Takeaways

  • Indian pharma and biotech plants are switching to EP pipes because the electropolished surface is smoother, more corrosion-resistant and harbours fewer microbes.
  • Eliminates micro-crevices and directional grooves where biofilms and product residues anchor, reducing CIP/SIP rinse times.
  • Enriches surface chromium content, significantly increasing resistance to aggressive chlorides, rouging, and pitting.
  • Directly supports validation, cleanability protocols, and audit readiness for USFDA, EU-GMP, and WHO-GMP Schedule M inspections.

1. Why Surface Finish Matters in Pharma Piping

In a pharmaceutical plant, the pipe is part of the process. Lines carry water for injection (WFI), purified water, buffers, solvents, intermediates and finished product. Anything that sticks to the inner wall can end up in the next batch: product residue, cleaning agent, particles or microbial film.

A standard stainless steel pipe looks smooth to the eye, but under magnification the inner surface is a landscape of peaks, valleys and micro-crevices. Those crevices hold residue that rinsing doesn't fully remove. Over time, microbes can settle there and form biofilm, which is hard to remove and a serious contamination risk.

Because of this, buyers no longer ask only "304 or 316L?". They also ask "what is the internal finish, and how is it proven?" Surface finish is now a purchase criterion in pharma projects, alongside grade, wall thickness and certification.

2. What Electropolishing Does to the Pipe

Electropolishing is an electrochemical finishing process. The pipe is made the anode in a bath of acid electrolyte, and a controlled current dissolves a very thin layer of metal from the surface, typically a few tens of microns.

Current concentrates on the high points, so peaks dissolve faster than valleys. The surface levels out, embedded particles and free iron are removed, and the metal is left with a chromium-rich passive layer. That layer is what gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance.

The result is a bright, uniform, very smooth surface. Unlike a coating, electropolishing doesn't add anything that can flake or peel. It improves the pipe's own surface, which is why it suits high-purity service.

3. Reason 1: Easier Cleaning and Better CIP/SIP Performance

Pharma plants clean and sterilise lines routinely using clean-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) cycles. These cycles only work well if residue releases quickly from the wall.

On an electropolished surface, product film and cleaning solution drain and rinse away faster because there are fewer crevices to hold them. Plants typically see shorter rinse times, lower water and chemical use, and fewer failures in rinse-water and swab tests.

This matters most in multi-product facilities, where changeover cleaning between batches is a major source of downtime. A line that cleans reliably on the first cycle saves time, and avoids the cost of repeating a validation run.

4. Reason 2: Corrosion Resistance in Aggressive Media

Pharma lines face a harsh mix: chlorides in water systems, acids and caustics in cleaning, high-temperature steam and frequent sanitisation. Over time, these attack the passive layer on ordinary stainless steel and cause pitting, rouging and discolouration.

Electropolishing improves the chromium-to-iron balance at the surface, which strengthens the passive layer. On 316L, which already has low carbon and added molybdenum, the effect is a surface that resists pitting and rouge formation noticeably better than a mechanically finished one.

For the plant, this means purer product (fewer metal ions and particles released into the process), longer service life and fewer unplanned line replacements.

5. Reason 3: Compliance and Audit Readiness

Indian pharma manufacturers work under the GMP requirements of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules (Schedule M), and many follow WHO-GMP. Export-oriented plants also face inspections from USFDA, EU and other regulators, plus customer audits.

Auditors look for evidence that product-contact surfaces are cleanable, non-reactive and documented. EP pipes make this easier to demonstrate: a defined Ra limit, material test certificates (MTC) with heat numbers, passivation records and clear traceability.

ASME BPE is the standard most buyers and consultants reference for bioprocessing equipment, including surface finish categories. Specifying EP pipes supplied against these expectations reduces the back-and-forth during qualification and the risk of observations later.

6. Reason 4: Lower Lifetime Cost

EP pipes cost more than standard pipes at purchase, and that is why some buyers hesitate. But the purchase price is a small part of the cost of owning a pharma line.

Consider what a poorly finished line can cost: extra cleaning cycles, failed cleaning validation, batch rejection from contamination, early corrosion and replacement during a shutdown. A single rejected batch can cost more than the price difference on an entire pipe run.

When plants add up cleaning time, chemical use, downtime and service life, EP pipes usually come out ahead. The decision is easiest to justify for product-contact and high-purity lines, and less important for utility lines that never touch product.

7. What to Specify When Ordering EP Pipes for Pharma

A vague order gets a vague product. Put these points in your purchase specification:

  • Grade: 316L for product-contact and high-purity lines; 304L only for lower-risk service.
  • Pipe type: Seamless or welded, as per your design basis.
  • Dimensions: Outside diameter, wall thickness and length, in tolerances matching your fittings.
  • Finish: Electropolished inside (and outside if required), with a maximum Ra value stated in micrometres or microinches. Typical pharma specs call for around 0.38 to 0.5 µm Ra on the inside; confirm against your design basis.
  • Standards: ASTM A270 for sanitary tubing and ASME BPE where applicable.
  • Documents: MTC per EN 10204 3.1, Ra test report, passivation certificate, and heat-lot traceability.
  • Packing: End-capped, clean-wrapped, and protected against contact with carbon steel.
